  • Details:  This is a fine porcelain collector's plate in a series called "Winter Scene" exclusively created by artist Robert Laessig, it is signed by the artist on the bottom left.  This is the third issue of this collection by Laessig, other plates in the series range from 1973 to 1977.  This plate depicts a wintery, snowy scene, with two people holding hands in the distance, walking towards a log cabin, a warm fire is waiting for them, smoke flowing from the chimney.  The plate radiates warmth in the cold days of winter.   It is not pre-drilled for hanging, you'll need a plate hanger, or stand to display it.  Not food safe.  The plate reads:

"Never a Christmas morning

Never the old year ends

But someone thinks of someone

Old days, old times, old friends"

Robert Laessig was an American artist, best known for his paintings, prints, and greeting card illustrations.  He  was born in West New York, New Jersey on November 15, 1913.  He started as a textile designer, having studied in Germany before WWII.  When serving in the war he became a combat artist, he illustrated the history of the 13th Air Force and completed ninety paintings, some of which are displayed in the Pentagon.  In 1950 he was hired by the American Greetings Company.  During his time there, he designed the Christmas cards for the White House throughout the 1960s.  He also illustrated covers for Newsweek, designed Christmas cards for Presidents, Governors and all occasions for American Greetings.  He continued to paint after arriving home from work and has won many prizes including:  the American Watercolor Society, Ohio Watercolor Society, National Academy of Design, Butler Institute of Youngstown, Akron Art Institute, Mead Corp., Hartford Insurance, Audubon Artists, etc.  Laessig died on November 15, 2010 in Wabash, IN, he was 97 years old.
